Sunderland Empire Theatre

Arts & Heritage | Site Decor | Community Engagement

Commissioned by Sunderland Empire Theatre and Arts & Heritage to celebrate the long history of the opulent 20th century theatre.

The work was based on old branding logos for the theatre featured on playbills from the 1930s found framed on many of the corridor walls throughout the theatre and placed in the bar foyer area on the ground floor, bringing some of the opulence of the rest of the building into the space in a contemporary manner.

We also ran a community engagement strand asking people from the city for their memories and photographs from their experiences visiting or working at the theatre and, alongside some from the archives, ran a workshop recreating some of these using cardboard to bring to life the elements within them.
