The Christmas Chill

Additions for ‘The Christmas Chill’ in the gallery of the Queens’ Hall, Hexham. A space to escape the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season. The space had been designed with wall illustrations to look like a home, with seating and games provided for families to enjoy a break from the cold.
I provided a curtain of snow to enclose the gallery a little from the foyer and staircase helping to create a more cosy environment.
The curtain was made from suspended recycled tubes of various sizes which gently move adding to the illusion of falling snow.
A large snowman was added to bring something 3d into the space amongst the beanbags and benches and a projector was used to further bring the atmosphere of snowfall into the wider space through twinkling lights.
Hidden in one of the snowflakes was a wee mouse, a fun easter egg to spot for any children who may have visited for the theatre’s 6 and under seasonal play "The Night Before ChrisMouse", a co production between The Northern Stage and Theatre Sprout.
Additionally a self led making activity linked to the pantomime running, Jack and the Beanstalk, was designed to fit the wall illustrations.
Blank strings were raised from appropriately placed wall mounted pots to create a loop and papers and card were available for children to add a leaf to the beanstalks.
Staff could raise the beanpoles when needed to allow more space to add leaves at the base and so grow the beanstalk. The activity allowed return visitors to view the 2 beanstalks growing throughout the installation.
