Makedo | Parrot Wearable
Costume Design | Upcycling | Step-by-Step guide
Wearable hat and wings made for a [re]design project using Makedo, an easy-to-use, open-ended construction toy system.
The [re]craft 'Make-It-Yourself' book featured step-by-step instructions for two dozen designs made from domestic waste.
The book was launched at an exhibition at Dalslands Konstmuseum in Sweden in the summer of 2013.
The initial print run sold out with museum curator Bodil Soderlund describing it as "totally brilliant".
The costume was made exclusively from the different colour crisp boxes kindly donated by the cornershop a few meters from my home.
The above prototype was then simplified into step by step instructions and made using a more eclectic mix of packaging in order to better illustrate the use of average household waste in the design.
The version on the left was shown at Dalslands Konstmuseum and at the [re]craft stand at the East London Design Show 2013 alongside other examples of upcycling from the book.
Despite Makedo having a redesign since making this you can still give it a go with the newer parts.
If you fancy a go head over to instructables for the step by steps.
And some smaller makes using Makedo’s current scru construction pieces and household recycling boxes made for Makedo for a pitch for a cereal box gift campaign.
Nothing came of them in the end but said cereal brand would have finally beat the reflective bike wheel attachments of my childhood, which were and remain the BEST falls-out-in-yer-bowl freebies.
